One Partner or Three: Choosing Market Research Vendors
One Partner or Three? Choosing Between Market Research Companies, Survey Programming Companies and Data Processing Firms
Most multi-country studies pass through three sets of hands. A research agency designs the study, a survey programming vendor scripts it, and a data processing firm delivers the tables.
Each may be excellent on its own. Projects rarely break inside any one of them — they break at the joins, where a questionnaire revision never reaches the script, or a coding error surfaces at tabulation with fieldwork already closed.
Projects rarely break inside one vendor. They break at the joins between them.
What each type of partner actually does
| Partner type | Owns | Where the gap opens |
|---|---|---|
| Market research companies | Study design, sampling, fieldwork, analysis | Programming and DP are often subcontracted onward |
| Survey programming companies | Scripting, logic, quotas, device and link testing | Little stake in what the data looks like after launch |
| Data processing firms | Cleaning, coding, weighting, tabulation, delivery | Inherit problems they had no hand in creating |
Where three vendors starts to cost you
The real cost of splitting a project shows up in the calendar and in accountability, not on the invoices.
Every handoff needs its own briefing, its own contract, its own version of the questionnaire. When a client requests a change in week three, someone has to carry it across all three teams — and that someone is usually you.
That scenario is not an edge case. With separate vendors, each change becomes a relay: brief the programmer, wait, re-test, then alert the DP team to a new variable. Time zones compound it: a scripting question raised on Friday can idle until Monday.
Accountability is the harder problem
When a quota fills wrong or a variable arrives mislabelled, three vendors have three plausible explanations and no shared incentive to settle it. Nobody owns the study end to end.
And it is becoming more common
Greenbook’s 2026 GRIT Insights Practice Report reports that the largest research firms are three years into a deliberate exit from fieldwork toward consulting and analytics. More studies are being assembled from separate specialist suppliers, and the coordination lands on the buyer.
When splitting still makes sense
Specialists earn their place.
Unusual methodology
A study with unusual conjoint or MaxDiff requirements may need a programming house that does nothing else.
Regulated healthcare work
Some projects demand a named DP partner your client has already approved.
A trusted long-term vendor
A vendor who knows your tab specs by heart is worth protecting.
The question is not whether one partner is always better. It is whether the coordination you are absorbing is buying you anything.
How to evaluate the top international market research companies
- Which countries and languages do you cover directly?Rather than through a sub-supplier? Claimed reach and in-house reach are not the same thing.
- Can you reach my respondent type?C-suite, ITDMs, HNIs and physicians each need different recruitment routes.
- Do programming and tabulation sit under the same roof as fieldwork? If not, ask who arbitrates when the two disagree.
- How quickly can you implement a mid-field questionnaire change?Ask for a turnaround in hours, not a reassurance.
- What is your on-time delivery rate?A partner that measures it will quote it without hesitation.
- Who signs off on data quality? You want one name, not three departments.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use one vendor or separate vendors for a market research project?
Use one partner when the study spans multiple countries, timelines are tight, or the questionnaire is likely to change during fieldwork, as it did in 15% of the studies Empirico ran. Use specialists when a single stage demands genuinely rare expertise, or when a client mandates an approved supplier.
What do survey programming companies do?
They convert a questionnaire into a working online survey — scripting question logic, setting quotas, handling routing and piping, and testing the link across devices and browsers before fieldwork opens.
One team. One point of accountability.
Empirico Research runs data collection, survey programming and data processing and tabulation from a single operations centre, across 70+ countries and 20+ languages.
